The journey from Canterbury to the West Coast over Arthur’s Pass illustrates the diversity and ruggedness of NZ’s South Island. The flat, agricultural patchwork of the Canterbury Plains are transformed into high country grasslands of Porters Pass and the strange limestone structures of Castle Hill. As we neared Arthur’s Pass the vast watershed of the Waimakariri River basin unfolds; a glacial landscape of terraces, shingle fans, screes and lakes. This is the largest painting I have attempted and it is east of Arthur’s Pass looking down the Mt White Road towards the Hawdon Valley.
